“The Role of Constitutional Courts as Mediators of Constitutional Meaning: Constitutional Literacy, Judicial Bricolage, and Language”

As part of the OCC Public Lecture and Academic Forum, the Office of the Constitutional Court hosted a lecture on “The Role of Constitutional Courts as Mediators of Constitutional Meaning: Constitutional Literacy, Judicial Bricolage, and Language”. We were honored to have Professor Dr. Maartje De Visser, Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University, share her expertise with staff and officials from the Constitutional Court and the Office of the Constitutional Court. The event took place on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at Kalanan Riverside Resort and was streamed live via the Office of the Constitutional Court’s YouTube channel. The event was divided into two sessions. The first session was a public lecture featuring two main topics: (1) “The Role of Constitutional Courts in Promoting Constitutional Literacy” and (2) “Judicial Bricolage: The Use of Foreign Constitutional Precedents in Singapore”. The second session consisted of a group discussion on “Constitutional Comparisons and Language” focusing on the use of language and phrasing within constitutional texts, as well as the role of language in the comparative study of foreign constitutional law.
